Hello from your Sharks Triathlon Club

- Its renewal Time so please log on and renew you memberships … Membership runs from 1/7/2010 till 30/6/2011. Please make sure your current email address is updated.

- We have missed those who forgot to renew last season and would like to remind all members that renewal can take place any time this month . It is vital for our club to stay united as while triathlon is very much an individual sport it also nice to be able to train with friends and have a club tent to sit at many races.

- This season we will be asking members to put their hands up to take and bring home the tents as not all committee members will attend all races but it is nice to see club tent as a mutual meeting place so please keep eye out to nominate for tent transportation.

- If any members wish to advertise their business on our web site then there is a small sponsorship fee of $250, Or if your wanting to sponsor the club and have your logo on our shirts and uniform please don’t hesitate to contact Richard Cahill for further information 0408971939.

Once again Thank you all for your continued support

Regards,

Kim Wevers

Guys

The club prides itself on the performances of our members throughout the season. I believe we have one of the more structured training programs within the Brisbane area that is helping to develop our juniors and seniors in their racing, and at the same time having a bit of fun.

This just doesn’t happen; there is a lot of work done by some dedicated people. You know the ones, the ones that are always at training helping out your kids or you, the ones that write to you in the newsletters, and the ones that are always at our fundraising activities. These people need your help. I am asking you to have a think about committing some of your time for the next season, to put your hand up and take a position on the committee and be one of those people that help your kids / or you out with your training or raising money to help pay for your heavily discounted club uniforms.

It might be to look after the tents on race days, or fund-raiser assistant, assistant coach for Brick sessions. If you would like to find out how you can help, or what exactly the committee does, please email me and I can send through some details. Positions will be called for at our AGM on Sunday – and I look forward to having some new faces on the committee with fresh new ideas.

Cheers

Richard.

Hi All,

What a weekend for racing ! so much going on at the moment with the Tri up the coast, the iron man and the WRCC kermeese all falling on the same weekend. Good luck to everyone competing in those events. I’ll be out at the WRCC kermeese on Sunday so looking forward to seeing some of the action out there for sure. Anyways a bit of news this week and some specials to run by the minister of finance.

WRCC KERMEESE

Like I said earlier, this weekend is the Mt. Cotton Kermeese. I’m really looking forward to it is already shaping up to be an unreal Sunday. From what I have heard the entries seem strong and I know on our side we will have a really good set up this year. We have about 40 grand worth of bikes from Trek that will be on display as well as some really nice bikes from Avanti, we all know a little bit of eye candy never goes astray. As if that was not enough I will also have my new bike out there on display and I will also make sure we have some race day specials on. So like I say shaping up to be an unreal day I think.

V.I.P TAGS

I mentioned it last newsletter but I’ll let you all know again. We have the V.I.P tags in both the shops for the Sharks and also the WRCC, I was out this morning handing some out but obviously there is a lot more members to the club than who I see on a Thursday so if you know of some other members that have not got one yet please tell them about it because I think you all agree it is worth it especially with that 20% off and not only for that reason but you are helping your club out the more you shop through us because each purchase you make 5% goes back to the club.

P.S The 20% off is for anything so that includes bikes and wheels.

TALK TO ME

So just a last note, I know that all the club members from the clubs we sponsor would never shop anywhere else but us but if on the off chance that you do find yourself in another shop and you do get offered a good price on something, anything, don’t be afraid to come talk to me about it. We sponsor you guys so obviously we want to be given the chance to help you out more than anyone else so like I say come see me first and just give me a chance to see what I can do.

SPECIALS

25%-50% OFF ACCESSORIES

So for this week we will be running a special on accessories store wide with 25%-50% off, so that’s pretty much everything. So if you been needing some lights coming up for winter then now’s a good time. saddle bags, pumps everything and at massive savings.

So that’s it for this week guys but like I say check the tent on Sunday as we will have some more day only specials going on there. Feed back is always good so if you have any for me please tell me but only if it is good hahaha. Good luck to everyone racing once again and see you all out there soon.

Cheers !

Etho and the Cycle City team.

Well what a very ordinary way to start off the new month ! rain, rain, rain and more rain, i think i speak for all the cyclist when i say enough is enough we need to be out on the road again. When a cyclist is away from their bike for too long it is never a good thing for friends and family nearby. At-least from the forecast it doesn’t look like we need to endure it too much longer.

The News

So enough with the weather and on to the news. Some of you eagle eye individuals may have noticed the new shop logo at the head of this newsletter. So with the new logo comes a few other small changes both stores Cycle City and Cycle Scene will now be known as Cycle City Cleveland and Victoria Point. The new email address is www.cyclecityredlands.com.au it is completely new so head over and check that out we are still working on it but it is looking great so far. There will be a few other small changes as we go along so you will just have to stay tuned for those.

Being March it is a massive month for the Wynnum Redlands Cycle Club with the Mt. Cotton Kermesse approaching fast on the 28th. Once again this year we will have a tent set up with products and bikes on display as well as our tools and repair stand for any last minute repairs you may need.

We have in-stock a gramin 705 and the funky new little 500 gps cycling computer and if you have not seen or heard about these computers yet then get in to one of the shops and check them out they are a must have for every cyclist. We also have in stock a few wheel-sets right from bomb proof training wheels through to top end racing clinchers and tubular come check them out and hit us up for a deal on those, perfect for Mt. Cotton Kermesse.

The other big news is that The Kieser (Henry) will be leaving for 5 weeks to head off to South Africa for a well deserved holiday with the entire family. I will let Henry tell you about what he will be up to over there but i will tell you one thing the man is in the form of his life and Mr Lance Armstrong should be very worried.

HENRY IS AWAY???

The next few weeks, I will be away in South Africa, doing a very important race. The Cape Argus is the biggest idividually timed race in the world. This year there will be just over 36 000 competitors. Big names in the past has done it. The likes of Eddy Merckx, The Keiser – Jan Ulrich, Matt Damon(actor) and this year, Lance Armstrong is doing it as well. The race is around Cape Point in Cape Town, South Africa for a 109km. It is a very hilly race with two 4km hills in the last 20km. It usually is a good effort doing the race under 3 hours. Jo Maartins will also do the race this year – he will be starting 2 groups behind me. Jo has done well in this race in years gone by.

We will fly the flag of Australia and the WRCC club high and hope we will be able to achieve our goals. If you want to know more about the race, follow this link: www.cycletour.co.za/index.aspx

The Specials

So what is a Cycle City news letter without some store specials ? well, it’s still a damn good news letter but the specials just adds a bit. Ok so we will have a sale running this week from Thursday (4th) until Thursday (11th) let’s call it a SSSHHHH don’t tell Henry sale. We are going to have 50% of clothing in both stores, store wide. That includes all clothing from skins compression gear to shop kit. Don’t forget winter is upon us so drop in and pick up a bargain on some of that stuff.

Also since the weather has been extra harsh these past few weeks we will be doing half price services for those that receive this newsletter. We are definitely the number one choice for servicing your bike, we treat it like one of our own which means that it will have to be nothing short of perfect before it goes out our doors. In most cases we can have a service out in around 24hours but it may be an idea to phone ahead and book a time to bring your bike in.

We have 2x Dura-Ace 7900 (the 2010 model) group-sets in stock which are going out at a bargain basement price of $2199, as i see that on PBK it is $2100 not including freight i think that our price is the best price you will find going around so if you are looking to upgrade your bike now will be the best time.

We also have a 2nd hand Time road bike in the store at the moment going out for a bargin. It is full carbon with sram force, excellent condition and has just had a full service the asking price is $2500 so once again i don’t think it will be something to last long. Come down and have a look if it is something you would be after or know of someone who is in need of a good 2nd hand bike.

Well guys i think that is it for now but you will be hearing from us again soon. Thanks to everyone for your ongoing support its great having everyone come through the shop from time to time even if it is for a chat. Until next time guys whether it be on the road’s or on the bush trails we will see you out there.

Cheers,

I’ve always told the guys in the squad to look after one square meter and one minute at a time. It’s such a hard skill to learn. When you go to work on Monday after racing on the weekend. The guys at work ask, “did you win?” After a lengthy, painful explanation about how age group triathlon is not so much about winning as it is improving times, being healthy and staying fit. They just don’t get it.

When your football team plays, all you think about is winning. That’s all the journalists talk about, how many wins, how many losses a team has had in the season. The worst thing the players can do is go out thinking about the end result. Football coaches emphasize the importance of sticking to the plan. Working the basics, sticking to the set plays. It’s the basic, no frills type of football which puts the flamboyant stars into positions from where they can work their magic.

It’s a lot like that in the longer triathlons. When you’re half way through a long and boring bike leg, in strong winds, grinding your way home, it really doesn’t matter if you have the latest GPS, or the latest “drinking system” fitted to your bike. It comes down to basic toughness. Confidence in your own ability. The ability to apply pressure to those pedals evenly, over and over, and over again, without ever losing sight of “the job at hand”. Never wasting any energy thinking about the final outcome, just getting the basics right.

The ability to concentrate on the job, seems to be the most valuable skill an athlete can develop. But how many do any training directly aimed at developing this skill? We all spend hundreds of hours training our body to develop the skills involved in swimming. The catch, the push, the recovery and the entry, we can do them in our sleep. But when a coach asks the squad to swim a two thousand meter continuous effort, the moans that come from the squad would make you think they’d been asked to do something hard. For a lot of those athletes, concentrating for 30 or 40min is the hardest thing they could imagine. What’s going to happen when they have to swim 3.8km in a race?

I have noticed the same weakness show up when I suggest that we do a 120km bike time trial. All of a sudden the squad is reduced to the “hard men”. A whole lot of excuses/reasons show up why some people can’t be there. Coaches don’t put these things into training programs to punish people. We’re not into punishing, we’re into identifying weaknesses and correcting them. Learning to concentrate, is correcting one of the most common weaknesses in triathlon. Long time trials are great for this.

It’s funny, but the type of training you like the least is usually the type of stuff you need most. To move ahead, to get what you want out of this sport, you have to trust your coach. Keep in mind, if you’re successful, you make him/her look good. You should both be working in the same direction. The moment you start to doubt whether or not you’re on the right path, you’re lost. It’s over. The same thing happens in really tough conditions. As soon as you “lose it”, that’s the belief that you can be successful, unless you can “get it back”, it’s game over.

Losing focus is not something limited to a few age group triathletes. People in all walks of life do it all the time. Giving up on something when you’re half way there is so common. It’s almost an epidemic. The most important assett the successful athletes have. Is the ability to “Get it back, when they lose it”. The guys and girls who we all see out at the front of the field, the ones standing on the podium at the presentations, are humans just like you and I. They have times when they doubt themselves. Of course they do. They’ve developed the ability to “get it back” in seconds. They may “lose it” many times in a long hard race. But they have a strategy in place where they recognise what’s happening and they’re able to switch it back on. That’s the skill which each of us needs to develop in order to race to our potential.

The first step is recognition of what’s happening. Be aware of self doubt, it sneaks up on you. The next step is change what you’re doing. Often going harder is a perfect antidote to self doubt. What have you got to lose? If you keep plowing along convinced that it’s “just not your day”, you’re going to have a bad result anyway. Why not go out in a blaze of glory. Just say to yourself “This is crap, this isn’t me, I’m better than this”. Then go harder for 30 to 40 seconds. Very often, you suprise yourself with what you’ve got left in the tank.

Be aware of what your thoughts were just before you started losing it. So often those thoughts are about other’s performances. Often thoughts of race outcomes will bring on a “losing it episode”. Try the 30-40 second test, then bring your thoughts back to the process, “the job at hand”. All of a sudden, you’re back in the race.

A donation will be made to the club to assist with fund raising. This is a donation, therefore I am not able to predetermine the exact amount. In the past, some donations have exceeded $1000.00 for 10 volunteers on Saturday and 20 volunteers on Sunday. For safety reasons all volunteers in Marshalling positions, out on the road, have to be adults. However there are a lot of positions that teenagers (14+) can handle provided they are supervised by a club member.
